i've tried some Slate stuff - and it's not for me. I've started collecting more native stuff recently from Plugin Alliance and Soundtoys when they are discounted heavily, but they can be CPU hungry on an older machine. I'll admit i bought into UAD 8 years ago, and just really like their plugins, still use 10 year old plugins on every mix because they sound good.
I can have a PT session going with an octo's worth of plugins (easily 60+), ableton running in rewire, be browsing the web.all on an outdated macbook pro I could buy a new mac, but oh what a hassle that would be. Why would I? Why would anyone spend a thousand dollars on a dongle that actually limits the number of instances you can have? Why would anyone spend twice as much for a UAD plug-in as, say, a Slate plug-in? Why would anyone buy into a plug-in model in which you're out your thousand-dollar dongle investment if there's a hardware failure? How could anyone not be offended by discounts that range from five to twenty percent off the MSRP?well once nice thing about being tied to a dsp chip or "dongle" as you put it is i can run the most modern plugins on a 6 year-old mac, and not worry about it bogging my system down.
